چکیده

This paper provides a comparative statics analysis of punishment in public-good experiments. We vary systematically the effectiveness of punishment, that is, the factor by which punishment reduces the punished player’s income, and we find that contributions to the public good increase monotonically in effectiveness. High effectiveness leads to near complete contribution rates and welfare improvements. Below a certain threshold, however, punishment cannot prevent the decay of cooperation found in the public-good game without punishment. In these cases, the possibility to punish may even worsen welfare. Finally, we show that punishment is a normal and inferior good. ∗Department of Economics, Royal Holloway, University of London, Egham, Surrey, TW20 0EX, UK, fax +44 1784 439534, email [email protected] †Department of Economics, Royal Holloway, University of London, Egham, Surrey, TW20 0EX, UK, fax +44 1784 439534, email [email protected]

The Comparative Statics of Collusion Models∗

We develop and illustrate a methodology for obtaining robust comparative statics results for collusion models in markets with differentiated goods by analyzing the homogeneous goods limit of these models. This analysis reveals that the impact of parameter changes on the incentives to deviate from collusion and the punishment profits are often of different order of magnitude yielding comparative...

Impure public goods and the comparative statics of environmentally friendly consumption

This paper develops an impure public good model to analyze the comparative statics of environmentally friendly consumption. ‘‘Green’’ products are treated as impure public goods that arise through joint production of a private characteristic and an environmental public characteristic. The model is distinct from existing impure public good models because of the way it considers the availability ...

Why people punish in public goods games , and on whom punishment is most effective : Conventional wisdoms reconsidered

Theoretical and experimental research underscores the role of punishment in the evolution of cooperation between humans. Experiments using the public goods game have repeatedly shown that in cooperative social environments, punishment makes cooperation flourish, and that withholding punishment makes cooperation collapse. In less cooperative social environments, where antisocial punishment has b...

Threat and Punishment in Public Good Experiments

Threat and Punishment in Public Good Experiments Experimental studies of social dilemmas have shown that while the existence of a sanctioning institution improves cooperation within groups, it also has a detrimental impact on group earnings in the short run. Could the introduction of pre-play threats to punish have enough of a beneficial impact on cooperation, while not incurring the cost assoc...
